Teaching English can be a passport to the world, and AIPE's Certificate IV in TESOL is the qualification to start your career as an English teacher.

AIPE's Certificate IV in TESOL is a nationally accredited and internationally recognised TESOL qualification to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages. Our course provides an introduction to theories and techniques for teaching English. You will learn how to analyse the needs of learners and have the opportunity to design lessons and resources to meet their learning needs. You will also have the opportunity to observe experienced teachers in action and then practise your newly-learned skills by teaching classes yourself.

The course consists of two modules: Methodology Module (5 weeks) & Skills Module (5 weeks).

Each module consists of 38 hours tuition per week, Monday to Friday (weeks 1-4):

  • 25hrs face-to-face tuition
  • 8hrs directed personal study
  • 3hrs Academic Support Centre activities
  • 2hrs teaching practice/observation

Plus (week 5):

  • 20hrs teaching workshop
  • 3hrs Academic Support Centre activities

AIPE's Certificate IV in TESOL course is unique as it offers:

  • 8 weeks of face-to-face tuition and directed personal study
  • 16 hours of teaching practice
  • 2 weeks of teaching workshops to ensure you graduate as a well-prepared, confident English teacher (teaching techniques, language development, resources development)
  • participation in AIPE's Academic Support Centre activities (learning/teaching language skills)

Units

Methodology Module
Analyse Language, Culture and Learning
Describes the skills and knowledge required to deal with the relationships between language and culture as well as culture and learning. It addresses the impact these dynamics have on the ESL classroom, and applications within ESL teaching.
Analyse and Teach the English Language
Describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse the functional nature of the English language. It provides knowledge of the language choices that are associated with a variety of social or functional purposes. In addition, this unit also provides basic knowledge of TESOL methodology and the application of the genre/text type methodology to specific learning goals.
Teach English Grammar
Describes the skills and knowledge required to addresses specific aspects of English grammar. It addresses the practical techniques required to familiarize ESL students with a variety of grammatical concepts.
Teach Spelling and Pronunciation
Describes the skills and knowledge required to understand the sound-spelling relationships in English. It addresses the techniques required to teach spelling and pronunciation.
Develop Resource Files
Describes the skills and knowledge required to develop a file of resources. It addresses the practical techniques required to organize materials and/or resources around grammar points, topics, levels and communicative functions.
Skills Module
Teach Speaking
Describes the skills and knowledge required to understand the functional nature of language use. It addresses the skills required to plan and deliver a speaking lesson which incorporate practical techniques required to for developing the spoken English skills of ESL learners.
Teach Listening
Describes the skills and knowledge required to listen to a range of texts. It addresses the skills required to plan and deliver a listening lesson which incorporates practical techniques required to develop listening skills and strategies.
Teach Reading
Describes the skills and knowledge required to read a range of authentic or published texts for specific social purposes. It also gives the skills to plan reading lessons with practical techniques for developing those skills.
Teach Writing
Describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake analysis of written texts. It addresses the practical techniques required to plan lessons that will develop writing skills for specific text types.
Use Technology to Assist ESL Learning
Describes the skills and knowledge required to use technology as an integral part of some ESL learning activities. It addresses the practical techniques required to teach some basic technology literacy, develop a portfolio of internet sites, computer software designed for ESL learning and other technology-based activities which can contribute to the learning process.
